WCRIS Summer Science of Reading Workshop

June 16-18 | St. Mary Catholic High School, Neenah

WCRIS and the Diocese of Green Bay are excited to host Angela Hanlin, former educator and co-author of It’s Possible! A Leadership Plan for Implementing Quality Reading Instruction and Ensuring Literacy for All, for a three-day science of reading workshop, June 16-18!

Ninety-five percent of elementary students, regardless of background, are cognitively capable of learning to read. However, only 33% of fourth-graders are reading at grade level in Wisconsin (and nationwide).

The key to unlocking students’ ability to read is implementing explicit and systematic instruction in the science of reading. By shifting the focus from how teachers are teaching to how students are learning and by implementing systems and structures for literacy instruction centered on the science of reading, students in Angie’s schools went from having only 10-15% proficiency in reading and math to 95-100% proficiency in about three years. Attendance also increased and behavioral referrals and number of students with an IEP decreased. Angie’s success is replicable!

Current law requires K-3 public school teachers, administrators and reading specialists to be trained in the science of reading. Private schools aren’t included in the training requirements, but the two lowest-performing Choice schools will be assigned a literacy coach under Act 20. In other states where science of reading professional development was required, public schools’ test scores skyrocketed. We want to give that same opportunity to private schools!
