Congratulations to our WCRIS member schools who have student Semifinalists for the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program!

On September 9, 2015 approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were named in the 61st annual competition. About 1.5 million high school juniors in over 22,000 high schools across the country entered the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).  The Semifinalists represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors!

A Semifinalist has an outstanding academic record across high school, is endorsed and recommended by a high school official, writes an essay, and earns SAT scores that reconfirms the student’s previous performance on the qualifying test.

From the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists, 15,000 are expected to move on to the Finalist level. In order to advance as a Finalist, the Semifinalist student, with his or her high school must complete a detailed application, which includes a successful academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership ability, employment, and honors or awards received. They will be notified of their designation in February.
