Opens the Way for the COVID-19 Relief Funds for K-12 Schools
The U.S. Department of Education has released Providing Equitable Services to Students and Teachers in Non-Public Schools under the CARES Act Programs.
The document provides information about equitable services for students and teachers in non-public schools under the $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act).
The CARES Act authorized funding for several distinct education programs. Under these programs, the federal government will make awards to Governors, and State educational agencies (SEAs) to help States to prevent, prepare for, and respond to the devastating effects of COVID-19.
Two programs require a local educational agency (LEA) that receives funds to provide equitable services to students and teachers in non-public schools:
- The Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER Fund). Wisconsin’s share is $45.6 million.
- The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER Fund). Wisconsin’s share is $175 million.
WCRIS has asked Governor Evers to provide a proportional share of funding to private school students from the federal GEER Funds.
