Schools nationwide are receiving anonymous, but specific, school shooting threats via Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram. Schools in Wisconsin have been affected, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of School Safety (OSS).

The OSS recognizes the difficulty of responding to threats from an unknown perpetrator and shared resources for schools on Saturday. WCRIS would specifically like to highlight this Virtual Anonymous Threat Checklist, created by the Kenosha Unified School District in conjunction with the OSS and local law enforcement. The checklist helps school leaders triage an anonymous violent threat and make a decision for the best course of action.

The OSS is requesting that schools report all social media threats – and any other tips – via its Speak Up Speak Out tip line so that it can better understand the origin of the threat wave to effectively assist schools.

To help our schools bolster their safety measures, WCRIS hosted a Virtual Critical Incident Mapping Demo on Tuesday that explains how schools can obtain a grant for a digital map of their school that immensely improves public safety’s response to any emergency situation and fulfills state law. Members can log into the WCRIS Membership Portal to watch the recording.

Member schools are also encouraged to save the date for member-exclusive Interactive Critical Incident Workshops in McFarland on Oct. 29 and Green Bay on Oct. 30. And, based on feedback from our schools, we just added a new Milwaukee-area workshop on Oct. 28! Save the dates and watch your inboxes for more information!
