The Department of Justice’s Office of School Safety says it plans to open the application process for School Safety Grants next week. Schools will have four weeks to submit an application via the DOJ’s E-Grant website.
Immediately after the school Safety Plan was written into law recently, the DOJ encouraged schools to file a letter of intent, if they wanted to access the grant funds. Now the DOJ says a letter of intent will not be required to apply online.
Applications that have cost sharing among many schools and that have a comprehensive plan that addresses both staff training and improvement in locks and doors, etc. will be most attractive for funding, according to DOJ sources.
Now would be a good time to plan what your school and staff need to improve safety before the grant opens next week. A good resource for pricing is the Department of Administration (DOA) website.
The DOA website provides a list of state-contracted vendors. These contracts may provide better prices for your school’s safety and security improvements. You can see available contract prices here (under “product” tab).
