For decades, state law has required that any student admitted to any elementary or secondary school or any child care center or nursery school must present, after 30 days of being admitted to the school, a written record of having received the proper immunizations for the child’s particular grade. These cover the usual measles, mumps, polio, rubella, etc.
The student must stay on the prescribed schedule for booster shots and the school must be informed of their completion.
Every school is required by Wisconsin law to submit a report to the local health department regarding immunization compliance of their students. The law gives the County District Attorney authority to enforce these requirements.
For more information regarding reporting, see this Department of Health Services (DHS) guide. See also the 2020-21 WCRIS Legal Handbook, page 71. Every WCRIS school was given a free copy. Click here if you need more. You can also access a digital copy of the handbook here.
The DHS Immunization Program, along with the Department of Public Instruction, is hosting a webinar on the immunization law on Thursday, August 26, 2021, at 1:00 p.m.
You can attend here. A copy of the recording will be available on the DHS website.
