The Legislative session just ended and Democratic Governor Tony Evers is clearing his desk of legislation approved by the Republican-controlled legislature. He has vetoed almost 50 bills, including several efforts to expand parental choices.
Here is a summary of bills he signed into law that affect private K-12 schools or may be of interest to private school educators:
2021 Act 213 – Special Observance Days: The Governor signed Act 213 into law on March 31. Effective immediately, Act 213 adds September 11 to the 21 special observance days for schools. The law is designed to help the memory of the 9/11terriorist attacks live on in the generations who were not able to witness it. A full list of special observance days can be found here.
2021 Act 214 – Foundations of Reading Test: The act addresses the change in the Foundations of Reading test by the testing company. Recently the makers of the test announced that the edition referenced in Wisconsin law will no longer be administered. The new law, effective immediately, allows the most recent and current test edition to be used for licensure.
2021 Act 217 – Early College Credit Courses: On March 31, the Governor signed Act 217, which amended the Early College Credit Program (ECCP). The bill removed the sunset provision that was in the law when it passed in the 2017-19 legislative session. The act will allow the programs to continue in the coming new school year.
