Back in March, WCRIS shared a story about the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS)’s warning of several confirmed cases of measles across the country ahead of spring break.
At the time, no cases were identified in Wisconsin, but a resident of Dane County was confirmed to have measles late last week.
The MMR vaccine is required for school entry in Wisconsin and protects against measles, mumps and rubella. The recommended two doses of the vaccine are about 97% effective at preventing measles, according to DHS.
The first symptoms of measles can seem innocuous, including high fever; runny nose; cough; red, watery eyes; sore throat; and, tiredness.
DHS is urging Wisconsinites to contact a health provider before traveling if they think they or their children have measles to minimize the spread of the disease. Go here for signs, symptoms and what to do if you suspect measles.
