State report cards for the 2022-23 school year were published this week by the DPI. Reports are generated for school districts, public schools and private schools that participate in the choice programs.
Several analyses of the data show that choice schools scored higher than public schools – especially in Milwaukee and Racine. Almost all of the top 20 schools in Milwaukee are choice schools.
The Institute for Reforming Government also proposed that the report card criteria could be too lenient as few Wisconsin districts “fail to meet expectations,” despite Wisconsin students’ state test scores only being average and Milwaukee having the lowest scores for Black students among large districts nationwide.
According to state law, a choice school must post its most recent DPI report card on its website’s homepage within 30 days of its publication. Choice schools must also provide a copy of the report card along with a list of alternative education options to each choice student’s family.
