Two lists of recommended curricula for 2023 Wisconsin Act 20 (“Right to Read Act”) were submitted to the legislature’s Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) in under one week.
Though two different lists weren’t specifically required, the committee has to approve the curricula that will be eligible for partial reimbursement under the Right to Read Act.
JFC members are reviewing the recommendations and have until Thursday, March 7 to submit feedback or request a formal meeting.
The first list of four recommendations came from the Wisconsin Early Literacy Curriculum Council last week, as required by Act 20. Read WCRIS’ Current Events Special Edition about it.
Then, the DPI submitted its own list of 11 curricula this week, after conducting an independent review. Learn more.
Schools aren’t required to adopt a curriculum from that list, but have to choose one of them if they wish to receive partial reimbursement of the cost of purchasing that curriculum from the grants under Act 20.
Public, charter and choice schools are subject to provisions of Act 20, including prohibition of using curriculum or supplemental materials that incorporate three-cueing beginning in the 2024-25 school year. It’s currently unclear if the DPI will keep a list of prohibited reading programs.
