Question: What if I don’t have all the information the DOJ requires in a safety plan or my local law enforcement has not yet approved of the plan and our school is getting ready to close for the holidays and leadership won’t be available until after the legal January 1 deadline?
Answer: Submit what you have to the DOJ so you have some submission on file to meet the statutory deadline. The DOJ will circle back for the missing parts, or you can e-mail them with the missing information after the deadline. The DOJ staff can also help nudge local law enforcement to review your school plan, if that is one of the reasons for your delay. The bottom line is WCRIS wants schools to be in compliance with the law by meeting the deadline. This will help fend off legislative efforts to further regulate our schools. In general, lack of compliance is cited by lawmakers as a reason for needing to create burdensome paperwork and costly penalties in all areas of the law affecting our schools.
