What You Should Know About the New House Speaker
U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) was elected the Speaker of the House of Representatives today, a great honor for the State of Wisconsin.
In addition to being third in line to the Presidency, Ryan’s leadership will also be decisive for federal policies that impact private K-12 schools.
As the state affiliate of the Council for American Private Education, WCRIS is being asked to help with outreach to Ryan.
If you or someone in your school personally knows Congressman Ryan and could help with outreach to him, please contact the WCRIS office so we can connect.
Ryan has a strong record of support for private K-12 education. He supports the voucher program for students in the District of Columbia and supported school choice when on the campaign trail for the vice presidency in 2012.
According to Education Week, in a speech on poverty Ryan gave in October 2012, he “recounted the positive impact that a private school in Detroit he visited was having on students’ academic careers.”
In the speech, Ryan said “Sending your child to a great school should not be a privilege of the well-to-do… I believe that choice should be available to every parent in our country, wherever they live. Education reform is urgent, and freedom is the key,” Education week reported.
