Resources Coming for WCRIS Schools
A new law, requires all students in grades 7 through 12 be taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and cardiocerebral resuscitation (CCR) in any health education course.
The bill takes effect for the 2017-18 school year, so WCRIS schools have one year to plan and practice the addition to your curriculum. WCRIS is working with the American Heart Association (AHA) to identify free resources for WCRIS schools, to help you comply with the law.
The instruction must be based on a program developed by either the American Red Cross or AHA, or done through nationally recognized, evidence-based guidelines for CPR and CCR training. Instruction must include automated external defibrillators (AED).
WCRIS is working with the AHA, which helped Edgewood High School in Madison get 20 manikins and training DVDs and recently provided St. Ambrose and St. Anthony with equipment.
Additionally, coming this June the AHA will be providing 100 manikins and training DVDs to each of the 12 state CESAs. Contact your CESA to borrow these resources.
It is also important to note that the instruction in CPR and CCR does not need to be provided by a certified CPR instructor. The instruction should however, be provided by an individual certified in CPR/CCR.
WCRIS will continue to work with the AHA and other partners in order to provide you with the easiest access to the equipment you need to comply with this new law.
