Title I Update
Guidance for Title I under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was recently updated by the U.S. Department of Education.
The changes don’t directly impact private schools, according to WCRIS Project Manager and state ESSA Ombudsman, Abbie Pavela. The guidance just clarifies how public schools can use a survey to collect poverty data from private schools.
The Council for American Private Education (CAPE) indicated that the updates reinforce the requirement for “timely and meaningful” consultation with private schools.
Civics and History Test Scores Declining
Eighth graders’ average scores in U.S. history and civics declined on the Nation’s Report Card, once again demonstrating the academic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Only 22 percent of students scored at or above the proficiency rate in civics on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). This is the first decline in civics scores since the assessment began in 1998, according to the assessment’s governing board. Shockingly, only 13 percent of eighth graders scored as proficient or higher in U.S. History.
Private school students didn’t constitute a large enough sample to be scored as their own group.
