Oral Arguments Heard in Landmark Case

The US Supreme Court, in December, heard oral arguments in the case Carson v Makin. It challenges anti-religious legislation that bars many private schools from receiving federal funds. If ruled in favor of private schools, federal funds could be accessible to private schools in new ways.

School Meals Get Extra Help Amid Shortages

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced in December $1.5 billion in aid to help address the supply chain issues facing many school lunch programs.

It is still to be determined if this affects the “free-for-all” school breakfast or lunch program or if it constitutes federal financial assistance.

Court Rules for Private School First Amendment Rights

The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland ruled in favor of Bethel Christian Academy in Maryland over the school being kicked out of the state’s voucher program.

The state removed the school from the program because the school’s handbook expressed traditional views on marriage and sexuality.
